Frequently Asked Questions
What is the GAD-7?
The GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7) is a 7-item self-report questionnaire used to screen for and measure the severity of generalized anxiety disorder. It is also sensitive to panic disorder, social anxiety, and PTSD.
How is the GAD-7 scored?
Each item is scored 0–3, producing a total range of 0–21. Scores of 5, 10, and 15 represent cut-offs for mild, moderate, and severe anxiety.
Does the GAD-7 only measure generalized anxiety?
While designed for generalized anxiety disorder, the GAD-7 has good sensitivity for detecting panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder, making it useful as a broad anxiety screener.
Is the GAD-7 free to use?
Yes. The GAD-7 is in the public domain and can be used without permission. It was developed by Drs. Robert L. Spitzer, Janet B.W. Williams, and Kurt Kroenke.
